PuTTY 0.60 Beta

putty0_60

Size: 1.67 MB
License: Freeware
Requires: Win All

PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

PuTTY is a client program for the SSH, Telnet and Rlogin network protocols.

These protocols are all used to run a remote session on a computer, over a network. PuTTY implements the client end of that session: the end at which the session is displayed, rather than the end at which it runs.

In really simple terms: you run PuTTY on a Windows machine, and tell it to connect to (for example) a Unix machine. PuTTY opens a window. Then, anything you type into that window is sent straight to the Unix machine, and everything the Unix machine sends back is displayed in the window. So you can work on the Unix machine as if you were sitting at its console, while actually sitting somewhere else.

New in this version:
Fixes two security holes which can allow a malicious SFTP server to execute code of its choice on a PSCP or PSFTP client connecting to it.

Windows XP SP2 Laptop Battery Drain Bug

Size: 570 KB
License: Freeware
Requires: Win XP

When you unplug the AC power from a Microsoft Windows XP-based portable computer, the battery may drain more quickly than you expect. Therefore, the operating system may shut down prematurely.

This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

• The portable computer cannot enter the deeper Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor idle sleep states.

This occurs when the USB 2.0 driver leaves the asynchronous scheduler component running continuously. This prevents the processor from entering the deeper ACPI processor idle sleep states, or C-states. C-states save power when the processor is not busy. These states range from C0 to C3 or C4. Typically, an idle portable computer uses the C3 and C4 states to preserve battery power. If an idle portable computer cannot enter or maintain the C3 or C4 states, the battery power drains more quickly. This problem is fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

• The USB host controller is unable to turn off.

This typically occurs when devices are removed from a nested USB hub that is attached to the host controller. The host controller does not recognize the device removal. Therefore, the controller is never turned off. This prevents the processor from entering the ACPI processor idle sleep states. This problem is not fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

• The USB host controller uses the periodic scheduler for USB 2.0 devices.

This typically occurs when devices that rely on the periodic scheduler are attached to the host controller. These may be isochronous (Isoch) devices such as audio devices. Alternatively, they may be interrupt devices such as mouse or keyboard. This problem is not fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

Note Various factors can affect the battery life of different portable computers that use different types of batteries. Therefore, you may not notice any improvement in battery life after you apply this update.

The patch only exists for x86 versions of Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

TweakUAC 1.0

tweakuac-1.0

Size: 85 KB
License: Freeware
Requires: Vista

TweakUAC is a freeware software utility that can be used to quickly turn UAC (User Account Control of Microsoft Windows Vista) on or off, or to make UAC operate in the quiet mode.

Turn UAC off
This option turns UAC off completely. If this is what you want, select this option, press OK, restart the computer, and you won’t see the elevation prompts anymore. Windows Vista will operate pretty much like Windows XP does when you login to its administrator’s account.

Switch UAC to the quiet mode
This option does not turn off UAC; instead, it only makes UAC to operate in the quiet mode. In the quiet mode, UAC does not display the elevation prompts for the administrators. That is, when you attempt to do an administrative task, you will be allowed to proceed automatically, without prompting you to confirm the operation. All other features of UAC would still be enabled: the programs will run with the standard user permissions by default, and the standard users will still see the elevation prompts (the quiet mode applies to the administrator accounts only).

Leave UAC on
If you have previously turned UAC off or switched it to operate in the quiet mode, you can use this option to restore the original behavior of UAC.

Note that if you turn UAC off or swicth it to operate in the “quiet” mode, Vista starts displaying a warning message in its taskbar. You can turn that message off, though: double-click on the shield icon in the taskbar to open Windows Security Center. Then click on the “Change the way Security Center alerts me” link, in the left panel. Finally, choose one of the “Don’t notify me” options.

Note also that if you have used the Local Security Policy tool of Windows Vista to change the advanced configuration options of UAC, they will not be affected by TweakUAC; you would have to use the Local Security Policy tool to modify them.

Returnil Virtual System Personal Edition

Virtual System Personal Edition

Size: 2.65 MB
License: Freeware (1 Year)
Requires: 03/XP/Vista32

The Returnil Virtual System 2008 Personal Edition is designed to introduce the benefits of integrating Instant System Recovery (ISR) within the user’s computer security strategy and provides both a demonstration platform for Returnil’s solutions and a means for Returnil to realize its commitment to provide everyone access to this essential type of curative technology.

Research shows that at best your anti-virus product is only capable of detecting an average 30% to 50% of all malicious content at any given time. Detection being the first step, only a fraction of the malware detected are able to be disinfected without any complications. Standalone, the traditional security suites are thus not able to provide you adequate protection even with all updates and upgrades of the software applied. The main underlying reason for this is that the technology used to produce malware has evolved much faster then the technology used by the security industry to combat it. Despite the high proliferation of total security suites the malware “industry” continues to flourish, the problem of security in the age of the Internet continues to grow.

Returnil virtualization technology clones a computer’s System Partition and boots the PC into this system rather than native Windows, allowing users to run your applications in a completely isolated environment.
Hence the session and all activity, malicious or otherwise, will happen in the virtual environment, not in the real PC environment. If the PC is attacked or gets infected, all you need to do is to simply reboot the PC
to erase all changes. After reboot, the system will be restored to its original state, as if nothing ever happened.

New in the Personal Edition:

* File Protection – This new feature will allow the user to selectively protect files and folders on alternate partitions. Further, the user can also specify the entire partition or drive (extra internal drive, USB drives, IEEE drives, etc).

* Anti-Execute (New tool) – This new plug-in is not designed or intended to be a full featured HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System). That said however, the feature will allow added white/black list control over most executable and loaded drivers.

* Real System Autoruns (New tool) – The new plug-in will allow an experienced user to view and edit auto-run entries in their registry while using the RVS System Protection and Session Lock feature.

* Real System Registry Editor (New tool) – This is a new feature available from within the Real System Autoruns plug-in and allows the computer administrator to make changes to the computer’s registry while using the RVS System Protection and Session Lock feature.

* Custom Virtual Partition installation path – New in v2,01 is support for installing the RVS Virtual Partition on alternate partitions or drives

* Virtual Partition drive designation change support – RVS now supports changing the Virtual Partition drive letter from within the Preferences menu without requiring a reinstall of the VP through the repair feature.

* Disk Cache privacy wipe – the 2.01 series now supports cleaning of the disk cache at shutdown of your computer.

* Right click Tray Icon and Toolbar control – This is a refinement to allow the user to activate or deactivate the Tray Icon and/or Toolbar through its right click menu.

* Vista hibernation support – the 2.01 series now properly supports hibernation mode in Windows Vista.

Returnil: Simple, Smart, and Strong Approach to PC Safety

Limitations: Free for home use only. Returnil Virtual Premium Edition is available for business.
